Designing a workflow around uncertainty

A practical evaluation checklist for structured decisions.

Separate judgment from action

A classification is one input to a workflow. Before sending a message, approving a change or modifying a record, apply deterministic rules for permissions and business constraints.

For example, an inbox router may propose a destination. Code should still verify that the destination exists and that the current actor can assign the ticket.

Build an evaluation set

Include routine, ambiguous and out-of-distribution inputs. Review outcomes by category rather than relying only on an average score. A model that performs well on common requests may still struggle with the cases that matter most to your team.

Decide what happens when confidence is low

A useful workflow includes a review queue. Choose thresholds using your own evaluation data and the cost of mistakes. Avoid borrowing a threshold from an unrelated example.

Measure the whole system

Record end-to-end latency, failures, retries and human review effort. Keep input size and network location consistent when comparing alternatives. Provider benchmarks are context, not a service-level promise for your application.

Start with a limited rollout. Preserve enough audit information to investigate a decision while following your data retention policy. Explore TypeSafe’s confidence documentation and published evaluations before designing your own experiment.
